Rachael Houser

I’m a registered nurse turned photographer who recently added certified breastfeeding specialist and certified sleep consultant to her resume. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University and have worked in ICU, surgery, and pain management. I start “taking pictures” while in nursing school as a hobby but it quickly became much much more and before I knew it I was having to quit my full time nursing job to make time for my full time photography business.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, my husband and I were both diagnosed with infertility. We tried for years and years to conceive on our own and finally sought help. Thanks to specialists and one successful in-vetro fertilization cycle, we became pregnant with our son. After suffering infertility and a difficult pregnancy, my nursing instincts kicked in and I researched and learned everything I could about everything baby related. I dubbed myself as a pregnancy/labor/delivery/baby know it all.

I thought I knew it all (still do somethings!) but after weeks of struggling to breastfeed my newborn son, I realized I didn’t know everything about breastfeeding. Enter profession number three. I received my Breastfeeding Specialist Certificate online from Lactation Education Resources which is accredited by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center’s Commission. I am currently working toward my International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.

My son was 5 ½ months old when he stopped sleeping well. Up until that point I thought we had it made but after experiencing a swift decline in crib and sleep acceptance, I knew I had to do something – read every baby sleep book I could get my hands on. This led to weeks of bed-sharing and failed attempts of “sleep training” and finally I knew we needed expert help. After working with SleepWell Baby to teach my own son the skill of independent sleep, I became a certified sleep consultant through their training program.

I look forward to using my knowledge and skills to help parents struggling with keeping their baby well fed and well slept.
